Netflix and Chill - Two

Wednesday May 24, 2017

Main Image

We’re back again with our Netflix and Chill blog and this week I’m going to look at films to ‘chill’ to, a series to binge watch and a sci-fi film that is a must watch.

But before we talk about the films I’m going to delve a little into the history of the expression, Netflix and chill.

It was first recorded in a tweet by ‘NoFaceNina’ in 2009 but referred to relaxing in front of the TV rather than having it’s later sexual connotations.

Netflix slowly gained popularity and slowly evolved into the brand being used as a verb. It wasn’t until 2014 when ‘Netflix and chill’ had become what it is today.

As a result, and in hilarious fashion the internet was riddled with memes (bad choice of words, I know).

It doesn’t stop there, in 2015 the Netflix headquarters sign had been graffitied to add the word chill and even universities had “Netflix and chill’ festivals which had to be cancelled for fear of too many people in attendance, or maybe they were worried about causing another baby boom.

Now what is a ‘Netflix and chill’ film, well I guess it’s something you don’t want to watch, or something romantic or how about a horror film. That’s right, a horror.

Think about it. You get a bit scared, you snuggle up and let’s be honest most horror films are just comedies in disguise.

I’m not talking about The Human Centipede here. That isn’t going to get anybody in the mood, instead, let’s look at Cabin in the Woods. It’s not on Netflix but there are other ways to watch films online, wink wink, nudge nudge.

This Joss Whedon film is a perfect homage to the horror classics of the past. With some big names and enough jumps, frights and laughs to snuggle up to, this is a great Netflix and chill film, and if you do stop watching it for whatever reason, you won't lose much sleep over it.

Moving onto my favourite section, binge watching!

Perfect for those rainy days or when your hangover is too bad to get out of bed.

What better a series than the Netflix Original, Narcos. it follows two DEA agents tracking and trying to capture the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. Not only is this series extremely gripping there is 2 full seasons to indulge on. It’s not only a great drama but includes some interesting facts and draws on true stories, everything from Escobar’s secret stashes of money hidden all over Colombia and much, much more.

One of the first Netflix original series, this is certainly a must watch and to top it off, it includes some career-making performances.

Let’s finish off with a sci-fi master class, Ex Machina. This is a beautifully conceived film about what makes us human, and deals with artificial intelligence.

I can hear you saying, it’s been done before, and of course it has but not like this!

This slow burner doesn’t drop the ball once, which is such a hard skill to pull off.

This is mostly down to Alex Garland’s incredible script writing and is even better directing, and it really will have you double guessing every moment.
