London, home to the West End, the home of theatre. With Comedies, Musicals and everything in between, it’s sometimes its hard to know what to see, and let’s be honest it can be a pretty pricey mistake.
So, I’m going to look at some of the options available, what’s reasonably priced and what’s good for what occasion. Let’s start with The Comedy About A Bank Robbery, and what a hilarious place to start.
So, let me give you a bit of background on the masterminds behind this skilful play and also The West End hit The Play That Goes Wrong.
They are aptly called Mischief Theatre, made up of former students of LAMDA drama school. They set up a small comedy improv troupe and started performing on the London Fringe before winning awards at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Then came their defining moment, they created a show called ‘The Murder Before Christmas’ and performed at the Old Red Lion Theatre pub, which was picked up by West End producers and became The Play That Goes Wrong.
So firstly I’m not a huge fan of dates at the cinema, just sitting in silence watching a film isn’t really what it’s all about but theatre is different. There’s a sort of ritual with going to the theatre, grabbing a drink before hand and getting your glad rags on. Also, there’s something about live performance that you just can’t beat and with this show, in particular, it requires a level of engagement and you never feel you have to sit there in silence, as they ask for a lot of audience participation.
It feels more like you are part of the show than sitting watching it.
The show, for those of you, who haven’t seen the Play That Goes Wrong, is a slapstick comedy about how horribly wrong a plan to rob a bank can go.
A priceless diamond has been entrusted to a bank for safe keeping unfortunately for the bank some people have their eyes on the diamond for themselves.
Without spoiling the show lets just say that the diamond is not as safe as you would think. The script has all the puns and wordplay that you would hope and the cast not only deliversr perfectly with great comic timing but also bring a level of athleticism to the tricky and daring stunts that will have your jaw on your lap.
So why is this a good date, well it's just damn good fun and will have you laughing the whole time. I decided to take my date to this show after having seen the Play That Goes Wrong. We went for drinks before hand to catch up and of course grabbed one in our plastic glasses for the show (and pre-ordered interval drinks too).
I found well-priced tickets on one of the many theatre ticket apps. Now, these aren’t going to be front row seats but since it was a date I thought it would be a good idea to sit nearer the back in case we wanted to steal a kiss.
The seats didn’t even have a restricted view so all in all a bargain, not that I’m cheap or anything.
The Comedy About a Bank Robbery is a fun date/night out that will sure to have you both laughing your socks off, and without taking anything away from the show, if you do happen to enjoy each others company a little too much at times you won't miss too much of the story.
