To some, the idea of speed dating can be a little nerve wracking. After all, you are working against the clock and everyone wants to make a great first impression. To help banish those nerves I’ve put together a couple of go-to questions to ensure your date goes off without a hitch.

Here’s my top five speed dating questions for this week.

Number 1 – What's your favourite food/dish?

If a way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach, then I think it's fair to say this one applies to men as well. Although it might seem a little bland at first sight, never under estimate a person's passion for food and what it can tell you about them.

It's also a great ice-breaker and will probably get you both conversing easily, plus they say you can learn a lot about a person based on what their favourite food.

Number 2 – If you could go on holiday anywhere, where would you go?

This question will help you discover common ground. Is your date a beach lover or activity focused? Mountain trekking or city break lounge loving? If you like what you hear you might have a match coming your way.

Number 3 – So what would your dream super power be?

Don't be afraid to have a little fun with your speed dates. This question might not tell you whole lot about your potential date (although then again it easily could). But it will no doubt get you talking and wash any nervousness away.

You might even get a debate going on about the pros and cons of each other's desired powers. Plus there's always the great follower up of asking if they'd be a villain or a hero.

Number 4 – Who would play you in the movie of your life?

A fun twist on the "what's your favourite movie?" question, while it might not seem like it at first this question can tell you a lot about a person. Who they pick will likely tell you about how they view themselves and give you an idea about the movies they like.

Plus this opens up many possible further questions about what they like to watch or what actors or actresses they like. While someone’s television or movie habits might not seem like the most important thing to look for, having a shared interest in a certain genre or series is great way to connect with someone.

Number 5 – What’s your perfect first date?

It’s an oldie but it’s a classic for a reason, this question will tell you a lot about the person you’re taking to. You’ll find out what they enjoy and get a good idea about the person they are, and not to mention if you do decide to go on a date you’ll get an idea about what to expect.

And don’t worry if their ideal first date isn’t exactly something for you, you can always debate the pros and cons of each other’s perfect dates.

So what makes these questions good?

These questions will tell you something different about your speed dating partner. Questions one, two and five are all great ways to break the ice and banish any nerves you might have, while questions three and four are a little more quirky and fun. Check out our forthcoming events, there's bound to be one near you soon.

The beauty of Speed Dating London lies in its no-nonsense approach. You take an equal number of single girls and guys, put them in a room and give them a few minutes to chat with every other member of the opposite sex.

Original speed dating events in London normally begin at 7.30pm. You will need to register with our hosts and to begin with they will issue you with a score sheet. This will help you to keep track of the singles that you would like to meet again and perhaps go on a date with. After a short period of mingling, your host for the evening who will run through detailed instructions and give you your starting position if you are a guy or table for the event if you are a girl.

Meet & Mingle

A London speed dating event is split into two halves, each lasting around an hour, there will be an interval at half time of about 15 minutes for speed dating London. You will have between 4 and 5 minutes with each person, after which you need to tick a box on your score sheet - "yes, I would like to meet this person again" or "no. Thanks but no thanks". Or "friend" if you'd like to get to know them platonically. Make sure that you do this after each date to keep track. Afterwards there is an opportunity for everyone to meet and mingle informally - this is often where the real action begins, so make sure you don't disappear too quickly!
