We all love a good watering hole, don’t we? And London is full of them, from traditional boozers to clubs, quirky establishments and themed bars, there is a lot on offer.
So where to start? In our watering holes blog, I’m go through some hidden gems, and some classic venues that you just might not have had a chance to visit yet or have not been sold on in the past. So whether you are lost for something to do at the weekend or looking for a good place to take a date, this is the blog for you.
With the summer weather beginning to tease us with its presence I’m going to start with a look at beer gardens, and the Duke of Edinburgh in Brixton boasts one of the biggest beer gardens in South West London, if not in London.
The pub is situated on Ferndale Road it’s a short walk from both Brixton and Clapham North underground stations.
Don’t be deceived by its relatively small exterior this place is like a tardis. Walk in the front door where you find the bar which extends the whole length of the interior and if you keep walking out the back, you are met with by a path and at the end of this path is a gorgeous sun trap.
This huge beer garden has a bar outside as well as a barbeque station, which you cant miss as the smell of incredible food hits you like a wall.
If like me you can’t sit too long in the sun (Scottish skin) there are huts to provide shade.
Now, I won’t lie to you, this hidden gem gets rather busy when the sun is out.
If you are planning a trip down for some food or a catch up with a group of friends, you might want to book a table in advance.
There is an online form you can fill in but I just went in and spoke to one of the friendly bar staff, who were so helpful.
I had a large party of friends coming down and helped me to pick the best table to maximize our time in the sun.
The food is incredible as well, with the option of the outside BBQ menu it also has great pub grub. The menu ranges from snacks like Wings and Saltfish Fritters, to big plates like your classic Bangers and Mash but where it gets interesting Jerk specialty dishes like Jerk Chicken and Jerk Halloumi.
The menu is brought to you by White Men Can’t Jerk, which they clearly can and I can vouch for that having had the Jerk Chicken Meal!
Now if you’re thinking that a great beer garden, a list of great food and ales/beers is where it stops with the Duke of Edinburgh think again.
The Duke of Edinburgh is a triple threat, not only showing live sports it also has Crazy Golf.
Yup, you heard me right. Plonk Crazy Golf offers nine different putting challenges in a heated marquee and has just had a new UV makeover. You can book this online in advance as well.
The Duke of Edinburgh really is one of the best beer gardens south of the river, and just as I did you can find yourself spending the whole day here and never running out of things to do.
Have a browse of their website at www.dukeofedinburghpub.com for pictures, booking and more information. It really does make for a cracking day out!
