Netflix are always adding new films but that doesn’t mean they will all be recent releases.
I for one am guilty of not watching films if they’re in black in white or just look a bit dated, especially action films or anything you would expect to have special effects.
To me, there’s nothing worse than a explosion that you could probably do on an iPhone these days or watching a model train that you know fine well is no bigger than a roll of salami.
But some films don’t need all that jazz and if anything, the oldies focused more on the script, the story and character relationships which a lot of films these days just don’t even bother with, expecting the CGI to do all the work.
It’s like what they say, they just don’t make them like they used to.
This week I’m going to delve into the classics that are on offer and are well worth a watch.
First up we have WAR GAMES one of the first ever films on artificial intelligence right at the birth of the internet.
Now don’t expect any mac book pro’s, I’m talking those old BBC computers you got back in primary school, well at least in my days anyway.
This classic stars Matthew Broderick who accidently hacks into a military computer system and believes he is playing a war game when in fact he is playing real life nuclear war.
This suspenseful is masterfully put together and has you on the edge of your seat for the duration and despite being released in the 80’s is still miles better than some of the shockers they release today.
Next up we have one of the all time classics and if you haven’t seen THE BREAKFAST CLUB then you haven’t lived.
This film again released before I was born but still relatable today.
Five students in an American High School have to spend 9 hours of detention together on a Saturday. These five who have nothing in common have to write a one thousand word essay about who they think they are.
At the beginning they would probably say exactly what the world perceives them to be but through their adventures together and baring their souls to one another they soon release they have a lot more in common than they thought and are so much more than the labels the world would put them under.
Starring some big names from the 80’s and 90’s like Emilio Estevez. The Breakfast Club is a coming of age masterpiece that everyone no matter what age or generation should see.
Finally, we have STIGMATA. Another classic from the pre-millennial film archive starring Gabriel Byrne and Patricia Arquette.
This film follows a priest who acts as a researcher for the Vatican on so-called miracles. He is called to look into the supposed stigmata (the wounds of Christ) that develop on a hairdresser from New York. This leads him to question his faith and the discovery of a lost gospel that could spell the end of the Catholic Church.
It also turns out that this hairdresser may be possessed by someone or something other than the wounds of Christ. This 1999 horror classic relies on the depth of its script and incredible film making to have you hiding behind the sofa.
I’ve given you a mixed bag from AI to horror which I hope you will enjoy now as much as I did when I first so them and maybe even lead you to watch more golden oldies. After all that is why they’re called classics.
